Developing skills to support young people
Young Solutions has developed a range of e-learning training courses for individuals involved in improving the quality of life for children and young people.
These short, informative courses are aimed at volunteer and paid youth workers, play workers and group leaders, and are geared towards building skills, amassing knowledge and ensuring good practice. They are ideal as an introduction to youth work and cover most of the essential areas for a new volunteer, paid staff member or trustee. These courses are all at an awareness level.
The sessions allow individuals to access suitable training and to learn in their own time. Each course takes approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to complete, but individuals can complete them at their own pace. Each session finishes with a short assessment to test the knowledge gained and a CPD certificate can be downloaded when the course has been passed.
Courses are currently available in the following topics:
- The Basics of Good Youth Work – what is Youth Work; role of the Youth Worker; informal learning; how to encourage participation and empowerment; planning sessions.
- Safeguarding Adolescents – issues that affect young people; risk-taking behaviours; intervention by professionals; safeguarding procedures; consent and confidentiality.
- Dealing with Challenging Behaviour – why a young person may present challenging behaviour; tactics, methods and approaches to support young people; managing situations safely.
- Basic Drug and Alcohol Awareness – the most commonly misused drugs (including class A, B, C and new psychoactive substances); what the drugs are and how to recognise them; effects of misusing drugs and alcohol; signposting young people to relevant services.
- Introduction to Young People’s Mental Health – how mental health is defined and changes over time; risk factors and protective factors; most common mental health problems; signposting young people to relevant services.
