Supported by the Big Lottery, Shape Up for Work built the confidence and fitness of young unemployed people.

Unemployment can create a vicious circle leading to low self-esteem while the lack of employment reinforces a lack of confidence. Shape Up for Work aimed to break that cycle.

The ethos behind the project was that being fit can make young people feel better about themselves and this contributes to their self-assurance and self-esteem. In turn this can improve their prospects for gaining employment. Our Shape Up for Work project was aimed at unemployed young people aged 18 – 25 and enhanced their chances of gaining employment or training.

The project was delivered in three locations in Worcestershire through 10 hour long sessions over 10 weeks.  Sessions include fitness activities, discussions about exercise, nutrition, and healthy eating with employment support being provided immediately after the fitness session. All participants completed an employment and personal fitness plan to help them to set targets.
