If you have concerns about the safety or well-being of a child or young person, it is vital you act now.

Here is a guide outlining the steps to follow to voice your concerns, report an issue and ensure individuals in your care are safe and free from harm.

1. Stay calm and do what you can to comfort and reassure the child or young person.

2. If possible, make sure the individual is in a SAFE PLACE and that someone suitable is with them.

3. In an emergency, CALL 999 for Police and/or Ambulance services.

4. Otherwise CALL the Family Front Door on 01905 822666, or out of office hours call the Children’s Services Emergency Duty Team (EDT) on 01905 768020.

5. Tell them about the situation or your concerns and follow the advice they give you.

6. Make notes of everything that happened including dates, times, facts, who was involved and the name and date of birth of the child/young person (here is a sample form you can use).

7. Report the situation to your Designated Person for Child Protection and your manager or trustees as soon as possible.

It is important to remember:
  • The safety of the child/young person is the most important thing.
  • If in any doubt, consult with your Designated Safeguarding Officer, manager or the Family Front Door – they are there to help and give advice.
  • Make sure you get some support too.
